Few Places Left Where Milwaukee Teens Feel Safe

As Milwaukee mourns ten individuals lost to gun violence in seven days, family members Shateria and Dearia Wiley, Nasiera Cloyd and Timasia Mack describe the scene on Lake Drive on July 3 during the fireworks where 14-year-old Tariq Abkar was shot and killed. Precious Lives producer Emily Forman talked to the girls about how they reacted to hearing the gunshots, and about finding refuge in the few places in Milwaukee they feel safe.

Shateria Wiley is a Messmer High School student, and an intern at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The program gives students an opportunity to practice journalism.
